How Long Is A Forklift Licence Valid For In Australia?

TL;DR

In Australia, a forklift licence is valid for 5 years from the date it’s issued.

Your exact expiry date is printed on your licence card, so check the card rather than estimating or relying on a reminder notice.

When we speak of a Forklift licence, people are usually referring to one of the following two licence classes:

  • LF Licence (licence to operate a traditional forklift truck)

  • LO Licence (licence to operate an order picking forklift truck)

What a “forklift licence” covers (LF and LO) in Australia

A forklift licence is the formal authority to operate the relevant type of forklift at work.

It allows you to legally operate that class of forklift in a workplace under Australia’s High Risk Work framework

It confirms that you have met the national competency standard for operating that equipment safely, including load handling, stability, pre operational checks and hazard awareness.

To have the licence issued, you must complete training and assessment through a Registered Training Organisation, receive your Statement of Attainment, and then apply through your state or territory workplace safety regulator.

Is it the same in every state and territory?

Yes. A five-year term is the standard across Australia, but the renewal admin can change depending on where you live and work.

Renewal method (online, in person, or a mix)

Renew before the expiry date on your card. Don’t rely on a reminder notice. If your address or email is out of date, you may not receive one.

Renewals are handled by the regulator, not the RTO. Expect ID checks (often aligned to a 100-point ID standard), a current photo, and payment of the renewal fee.

What if your forklift licence has already expired?

Once it’s expired, you’re typically not permitted to operate a forklift until the licence is renewed and current again. Some regulators allow renewal within a limited window after expiry, while longer lapses may trigger extra requirements under that regulator’s rules.

If you’re returning after a long break, changing industries, or moving to different equipment or site conditions, a forklift operating refresher course can be a practical way to rebuild operating confidence and update your safety knowledge.

In Melbourne, Trainix offers a forklift refresher course to help you get comfortable operating forklift licence again.
