Is an interstate forklift licence valid in Victoria?

Yes. In most cases, a current interstate forklift licence is recognised in Victoria, as long as it covers the right class for the work you’ll be doing.

In Australia, the forklift licence on your card sits within the national licensing system for high-risk equipment.

The key point for operators and employers is simple: the licence is recognised across states, but Victorian workplaces can still have their own verification steps, site rules and competency checks.

What type of licence are we talking about? (Licence vs “forklift ticket”)

“Forklift ticket” is the common parlance, but in Victoria you must hold a WorkSafe issued High Risk Work Licence to legally operate a forklift at work.

For forklift work, the courses required are:

If you’re expected to operate another plant, don’t assume your forklift licence covers it. Check the job requirements before you start to ensure you have the necessary qualifications.

When is an interstate forklift licence accepted in Victoria?

An interstate forklift licence is accepted in Victoria when it passes a few practical checks that employers and site managers apply every day.

  • The licence is current. If it’s expired, you’re not covered to operate until it’s renewed or reactivated through the right channel.

  • The licence shows the right class for the role (LF, LO, or both if the job involves both types).

  • It’s a regulator-issued licence (not only a course certificate from a training provider).

Expect standard ID checks too. Your name needs to match your photo identification, and the card details must be readable and able to be confirmed if the site requests it.

When you may need to transfer or update details in Victoria

If you’re doing short-term work in Victoria, you can usually work on your current interstate forklift licence without transferring it.

A transfer or record update becomes more relevant if you’ve moved to Victoria for good, you need your address details updated, or your licence is close to expiry and you’d prefer to renew through the Victorian system.

Administrative steps can vary depending on where your licence was issued, so follow the process tied to your current issuing authority.

What Victorian employers commonly require beyond the licence

Holding a valid forklift licence is only part of what a Victorian employer needs to see. They also have to be satisfied you’re competent for the specific forklift and the work environment.

  • Site induction and traffic management rules, including pedestrian separation and loading bay procedures.

  • Familiarisation on the exact forklift model and any attachments you’ll use.

  • Extra supervision or refresher training if you haven’t operated recently or the site has tighter risk controls.

Quick checklist for a Victorian forklift job

  • Your licence shows LF or LO (as the role requires).

  • Your licence is in date.

  • Your details match your photo ID.

  • You’re comfortable operating the forklift type used on site.

  • You’re ready to complete induction and any verification steps.
